1986
Thomson & Son is a trading name of TimberMart UK Ltd. We began in April 1986 as a Timber Importer, initially to supply the Pallet and Fencing industries with timber from Portugal, Chile, Brazil and Sweden.
1993
We established contacts with emerging sawmills in the newly formed Republic of Latvia after the break up of the Baltic States in the Post Soviet era.
1995
We made substantial investments to form a sawmill and a forestry company, owned by the group. The sawmill processed in excess of 120,000 m3 of Softwood annually in the towns of Tukums and Stende, producing a complete range of sawn timber, agricultural and garden fencing products including, C16/C24 KD Planed, as well as Treated Timber. Treatment tanks and Kilns were located at the company’s port and storage facilities in Riga. As well as exports to the U.K. and Ireland the company also has regular sales to the USA, Japan, Germany and Spain as well as a thriving local market in Latvia.
2006
The opening of the new ‘Independent Builders Merchant’ in Barry had long been the intention of the company's late Managing Director, Mr. Ian Thomson.
Originally from Penarth, the Thomson family have lived in Barry for the last 40 years. With Graham Wood having worked along side Ian from 1997 until 2002, then again from 2005, it made perfect sense to promote Graham to Director in 2017. Graham was born in Quarella Street, Barry. He has been in the timber and building trade since 1989 and has visited sawmills in St. Petersburg and Medvezhyegorsk (Siberia) Russia as well as various sawmills in Latvia.
